A while back I attended a public hearing for organizations vying for federal block grant money in Yonkers. Here are some highlights, and they explain a lot about my work situation.
- "Everyone can overcome diversity" said one youth services provider
- One Program Director didn't know the name of her own program and started crying. Her colleague got up to try to assist and also wound up crying.
- A woman who, for all intent and purposes could not walk, got up to advocate for a parade (they did not get funded...)
- A woman who is the Executive Director of a Senior Center described senior citizens as "lonely, desolate people."
Welcome to Yonkers.
